Alma School District to standardize threat-assessment process across grades

A staff member said the district sent representatives to a safety conference and that team members — named in the meeting as JD, CGM Klein and Melissa Moore — are developing a threat-assessment program intended to be consistent from kindergarten through 12th grade. The presenter said the district wants an assessment conducted in one grade to be visible and meaningful to later principals and counselors so interventions and records are continuity-focused.
Under the plan discussed, the presenter said assistant principals will continue to perform initial threat assessments, but the district will add a counseling review step: Brandy Brogan will review assessments alongside counselor Dakiya to ensure the process is considered through a counseling lens and not only as disciplinary action. The presenter said standardizing terminology and process districtwide is an important change from what the presenter described as an “informal” approach previously.
Board members heard that the change aims to provide better support for students and clearer information for future school staff.
Ending Staff said they are optimistic about the approach and its potential to improve continuity of student supports as students advance grades.
