The Orderville Town Board received a written complaint from neighbors Jean and Betty Purvis alleging that the drainage ditch along Sean Sharkey’s property at 109 West 100 South is blocked by overgrown weeds, debris, abandoned vehicles and parked trailers, and that the condition poses drainage and fire hazards.
The complaint, read into the record by staff, says the blocked ditch diverts storm water toward neighbors’ homes and makes it difficult to access the area for town ditch maintenance. Neighbors also raised concerns about a large leaning cedar/pine tree near power lines and said that repeated requests to the property owner to clean up the site have not produced long‑term results.
Board members discussed process and avoided entering character or competency issues in open session. The chair said the town follows written complaint procedures and that the board will treat this complaint in the same manner as others: staff will draft a formal letter from the mayor giving the property owner a deadline to correct the conditions and the mayor will personally deliver the letter. The town cautioned it must avoid trespass and stated it will address the condition under town code and ditch‑maintenance authority.
Neighbors also asked the board to consider addressing related drainage problems on adjacent town sidewalks that can contribute to flooding. The board said it would follow the written‑complaint process and take action consistent with town ordinances and maintenance responsibilities.
