Two residents asked Washington City Council on July 9 to consider adding a water feature to the large-dog area of the city's expanded dog park to help dogs cool off during hot weather.
Susan Wolfenstein and Susan Reinhardt told council the dog park is heavily used and the small-dog side has a water feature but the large-dog side does not. They proposed a shallow splash pad or similar water element only intermittently activated in summer, with protective surfacing and shade structure to limit mud and reduce overheating of surfaces. Wolfenstein said she gathered signatures in support of the idea and that park users travel from neighboring communities to use the space.
Council members and staff acknowledged prior incidents where owners temporarily used the small-dog side to cool larger dogs, and asked parks staff to review the suggestion in light of budget and design constraints. The mayor invited parks staff to consider the concept and return with possible designs and cost estimates; no formal funding decision was made at the meeting.
