Benton County public works staff briefed commissioners on progress with the Transportation Safety Action Plan (TSAP), including task force meetings, stakeholder engagement and the identification of a high‑injury network that will be narrowed to roughly ten priority corridors or intersections.
Laurel, public works staff, reported three task force meetings and a stakeholder advisory meeting that included nearby jurisdictions and ODOT. A public online open house and comment map drew 6,480 views and 811 comments across the combined county–city outreach; about 171 comments were Benton County‑specific. Staff said the analysis combined crash data and public input and prioritized risky behaviors (speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving), lane departure and bicycle safety to identify corridors needing improvements.
Two corridors emerged in both public comment and technical analysis: Independence Highway and Bellefonte Road. Staff noted Bellefonte already has a project scheduled and said the consultant will develop a systemic "toolbox" of countermeasures—design fixes and policy changes—that can be combined with routine maintenance projects to increase safety and leverage limited funds.
Public outreach steps include additional task force meetings, another stakeholder advisory meeting around October, and a public open house in November. Staff said the plan is on schedule for a March 2026 finish and will be used to align future maintenance and safety investments.
Commissioners asked about how public comments on scenic or local intersections without recent crashes would be considered; staff said collision data drives the high‑injury network but public comment will allow inclusion of locations with frequent near misses. ODOT and sheriff crash data compilations (ODOT compiles police crash reports) will be used in analysis.
No formal action was requested; staff sought to inform the board of progress and next engagement steps.
