A Belmont resident urged the City Council on July 8 to prioritize safety improvements at the Ralston Avenue and Pullman Avenue crosswalk near the Safeway shopping area, saying the location has seen numerous crashes and several severe pedestrian injuries.
"This is a downhill stretch where cars often pick up speed," the speaker, who identified himself as Xiaoyu Xi, told the council. Xi said he researched collision records and found "17 accidents in the past 4 years," and that among those reported incidents three pedestrians were severely injured, including a 17-year-old girl. He asked the city to expedite a traffic analysis and deliver a concrete plan and timeline after he said months had passed since first contacting the city's parking and traffic committee.
Xi thanked volunteer members of the Parking and Traffic Safety Committee and singled out Daniel Matthews for assistance, but said vendor analysis results have been delayed and urged the city and its vendor to move more quickly. He said the crossing is used by families and preschool parents traveling to nearby Mary Morphett Preschool and urged the council to elevate the issue's priority.
Council accepted the public comment for the record; no immediate council direction was made on the dais that evening. The resident's comments are likely to be routed to staff and the city's traffic safety processes for follow-up and any potential capital or operational changes.
