Parks and Recreation board reports summer events; seeks volunteers for programming

Justice Bonaron, vice chair of the Parks and Recreation Board, gave the council a monthly update on July 8, summarizing current and upcoming events and board priorities.
Bonaron said the board’s recent youth field day had 17 preregistrations and lower attended numbers and reminded council and the public that the Little Mermaid and Princess Palace performance is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Eichelberger; a Reel to Reel concert will follow Saturday night. Parks staff also plan a shredding event on August 2 and Safety Town sessions in early August for children entering kindergarten.
The board listed ongoing duties: advising staff on capital priorities, cost recovery, drafting board‑sponsored programs and supporting department events including the YMCA trunk or treat. Bonaron said the board will forward YMCA participation numbers and results from a planned pickleball tournament to council once those figures are available.
Councilmembers asked about rescheduling previously cancelled events and about volunteer needs; the board asked for help getting the word out and additional volunteers. No formal action was taken.
