Fremont County appoints Cheryl Bauer as veteran service officer through 2028

The board read Resolution No. 10, Series 2025, which notes the statutory authority for a county veteran service officer and records that the previous officer, Martin Peake, has notified the board of his intent to retire. The resolution states the board’s confidence in Bauer’s qualifications based on her military background, education and experience.
Commissioners praised both Peake and Bauer. Bauer spoke briefly and said she appreciates the opportunity to serve veterans and that the role is largely assisting veterans through complex government benefit processes. A board member noted that Peake had said the veteran services office helps bring about $65 million in benefits annually to local veterans.
The motion to approve the appointment passed on a unanimous roll call. The resolution sets Bauer’s appointment to fill the balance of the current term through Jan. 13, 2026, and then for a full two-year term from Jan. 13, 2026, to Jan. 11, 2028.
