The Fremont County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation on July 8, 2025, designating July 10, 2025, as Gateway Depot and Plaza Day in recognition of the Royal Gorge Chamber Alliance’s acquisition and remodeling of the historic Denver & Rio Grande depot in Canyon City.
The proclamation — presented in the meeting and read aloud by the commissioners — traces the depot’s history, notes the chamber alliance’s 2025 purchase and remodel, and calls the site “a center of business and nonprofit vitality as well as a regional visitor and relocation center.” The board encouraged residents to recognize the chamber alliance’s work on the property.
Representatives of the Royal Gorge Chamber Alliance attended the meeting. Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the chamber’s foundation, and Bob Stovall, chair of the chamber alliance board, said the July 10 dedication (an open house and ribbon-cutting) will begin at 5 p.m. during the organization’s regular business-after-hours event. They said the project used ARPA funding the chamber received and broad community support.
Commissioners said they would attend a future tour if schedules required them to miss the Thursday event and welcomed the invitation to reread the proclamation at the ribbon-cutting.
The proclamation was approved by motion and unanimous roll call at the July 8 meeting.
