Lewiston commission approves home-based RG Hammer Knife Company license

Rod Hammer told the commission he forges and manufactures custom knives from a shop behind his new house and said the business would operate by mail rather than welcoming customers to the property. “Everything’s by mail,” Hammer said. He also said his shop is about 1,500 square feet.
Commissioners asked brief clarifying questions about employees and customer traffic. Hammer said he would have no employees and no customers visiting the shop. After discussion, a motion to approve the business license was made and seconded; commissioners voted by voice and the motion passed.
Staff told Hammer they would complete the remaining paperwork after the meeting.
The approval allows Hammer to register the business with the city and proceed with required tax and licensing compliance. The commission did not attach conditions beyond standard licensing and permitting requirements.
