Local students report on Girl State; youngsters and organizers thank county for Castle Country Classic livestock show support

Three students who attended Utah's 2025 Girl State told the Emery County Commission on July 1 that the program deepened their understanding of government and provided leadership experience. Megan Stilson, Lauren Nells and Kylan Kendall described learning about caucuses, city government and how to draft bills; one attendee said she advanced to the top 16 in consideration for Girls Nation.
Commissioners thanked the students for attending and encouraged their continued civic involvement.
Later, organizers and youth from the Castle Country Classic Livestock Show presented to the commission. Jason (presenter) and Swizzie Thornley reported that the show saw growth this year across species and that, thanks to sponsor support and fundraising, the show paid out $3,880 in cash awards and distributed buckles and other recognition down to fourth place in showmanship. Presenters said the show marked its 55th anniversary this year and that a new show ring and pens in Ferron improved the event.
Commissioner comments characterized the show as well-run and praised the dedication of families and youth who care for and present the animals. Commissioners described the time commitments required for successful showing and encouraged participation; attendees said the event builds confidence and life skills.
