A candidate for the Parks and Community Services Commission asked to be removed from the evening’s on-camera, recorded interview process because of concerns about workplace conflict and being recorded. The council offered to consider that person’s application on paper only and to include it in deliberations.
During the interview block, the candidate explained they work in the banking/financial sector and said they could not proceed on the record without first securing clearance from human resources. A council member said the recorded interviews are public and noted they are equivalent in subject matter to commission meetings, which are also public if the candidate were appointed. The council offered two paths: proceed with the recorded interview that evening, or have staff consider the application-only and include the candidate in deliberations alongside the other applicants.
The candidate elected to proceed by application only and withdrew from the on-camera interview. Council members discussed equitable treatment for applicants and said the city would accept the application-only submission to remain consistent with how other applicants who were unavailable for interviews were being handled.
Council staff confirmed the application-only candidate would be considered along with those interviewed on camera, and the city clerk will notify applicants about outcomes following the council’s decision-making process.
The council did not identify the withdrawn candidate by name during the public discussion; council members emphasized the need to be fair and consistent with all applicants when offering alternatives to recorded interviews.
