Board orders demolition of 244 Dalehurst Drive after inspector finds severe fire damage; owner deceased

City staff told the Building Standards Board July 3 that the property at 244 Dalehurst Drive sustained significant fire damage, and the board unanimously ordered demolition within 30 days.
Dangerous premises officer Hassan Alazawi presented photos showing large roof holes, charred studs, exposed ceiling joists and extensive interior debris. He said the owner, listed as John Douglas Ward, is deceased and that staff had been unable to contact any relatives or new ownership. The Office of Historic Preservation found the property ineligible for historic designation.
Alazawi said both the main house and the accessory structure showed severe charring to structural members and decking; the roof was covered with a tarp and had visible sagging. Photographs taken May 29 and June 26 documented interior collapse, damaged studs and holes admitting natural light in multiple rooms.
After staff testimony, the board voted 5‑0 to declare the main and accessory structures public nuisances and ordered demolition, vacating and securing of the site within 30 days. Staff will manage abatement and notify any known heirs or interested parties.
