The Public Works Committee approved a memorandum of understanding with the Forest County Potawatomi Community to support the tribe's application for federal tribal transportation funds toward rehabilitation of the Sixteenth Street Bridge.
Assistant city attorney Jordan Shettle and DPW structural design manager Jonathan Thomas explained the MOU creates a framework for the tribe to include the city project in its federal funding application under the Tribal Transportation Program. Staff said the Sixteenth Street Bridge rehabilitation is scheduled to begin July 14 and that the tribal application could provide additional federal dollars that would reduce city costs if awarded.
Thomas said the MOU is an intermediate step to facilitate the tribe's application; if funds are awarded the tribe and the city would negotiate a more detailed funding agreement that would include any federal conditions. Committee members welcomed the potential to access additional federal funding through the tribal program and approved the MOU by voice vote with no recorded objections.
