Caltrans updates Del Norte commission on US 199 roundabout, Wilson Creek meeting and Collier Tunnel rest area closures

She told the commission, “The survey is live through July 31, so I will share that link with you all following today's meeting.”
Tasha also noted a virtual public meeting for the Wilson Creek restoration and wall project (project listed as 0K140 in the milestone packet) scheduled for Monday, July 1 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., to discuss repairs and upgrades following coastal erosion and storm‑related landslides. The commission heard that project teams are coordinating with Redwood Coast Transit on bus stop planning for a Complete Streets project near Smith River (project listed as 0N320).
Commissioners flagged signage and welcome‑to‑California work at the US 199/101 entry; a commissioner asked whether signage work was due to start this summer. Caltrans staff said the milestone report showed construction scheduled to start in October of the prior year and complete in June, and that the project is running slightly behind schedule.
Several commissioners raised the recurring closure of the Collier Tunnel rest area. A commissioner described closures during peak travel periods and urged staff to provide a long‑term solution. Commissioners said closures and reported dumping at the rest area have created service challenges; Caltrans staff noted mechanical and service difficulties given the site’s location and the need to extract large debris. A commissioner asked that the matter be placed on the next North District meeting agenda for further follow‑up.
Commissioners were also briefed on the Last Chance Grade project outreach and a planned informal “coffee with Caltrans” event. No formal decisions or votes were taken on construction scheduling or on Collier Tunnel at the meeting; commissioners requested additional information and staff follow‑up.
