Committee approves alley vacation to allow Prince of Peace school redevelopment

The Public Works Committee approved a resolution to vacate a portion of a north-south alley bounded by West Mineral Street and surrounding blocks to accommodate a new school building for student Catholic schools (Prince of Peace).
Johnny Latsko of the Department of City Development explained the vacation would span approximately 237 feet south of West Mineral Street and that the applicant sought the vacation so the new school building and associated playground and festival spaces would be contiguous and avoid bisecting an alley. Stu LaRose of the project architectural team described the design change that would reroute the alley to the east so the school and church parcel would remain contiguous and students would no longer need to cross the alley for playground or festival activities.
Latsko told the committee the applicant worked with city staff to provide buffering and traffic accommodations so the revised alley alignment would minimize neighborhood disruption. Staff noted the City Plan Commission had recommended approval. The committee approved the vacation by voice vote with no recorded objections.
