Committee accepts MMSD green-solutions grants for bioswales on North Seventeenth and North Jefferson streets

Tony Jazek, DPW stormwater manager, told the committee the projects will install bioswales (depressed, vegetated curb cuts that capture and treat stormwater before it enters the sewer system) along North Seventeenth Street near King Park and at Cherry and North 20 Sixth Street near Tiefenthaler Park. The committee also approved a separate bioswale installation on North Jefferson Street associated with a protected bike lane project.
Jazek said the bioswales serve dual purposes: water-quality treatment and multimodal safety improvements, replacing some curb-based concrete elements with green infrastructure. Each grant requires a post-installation maintenance covenant with MMSD; staff recommended entering those covenants and setting up funding for construction and maintenance.
The items were approved by the committee without recorded objection after routine questions about design and function. DPW staff confirmed the locations on the project maps in the committee file and said the urban-design work is coordinated with multimodal and parks staff.
