Grand Prairie sends replica Liberty Bell to Ohio for restoration

Grand Prairie removed its one-ton replica of the Liberty Bell on Tuesday to be shipped to Ohio for restoration, Speaker 1, a staff member, said.
The bell — a 1976 replica that includes the original’s crack and was dedicated for the bicentennial — will be refurbished by specialists, Speaker 2, a contractor representative, said. “When it gets back there, it's gonna take us 60 to 90 days to really take everything apart, machine the new pieces. These are kind of 1 of a kind, bolts. The the bolts that hold the bell onto the yoke are called the head bolts and we want to make sure that those are, replicated and measured out. Replace all the hardware so that it's safe and good for another 40 or 50 years,” Speaker 2 said.
Speaker 1 said workers spent about an hour removing the bell so it could be shipped to Ohio. Officials also said the bell will receive a removable clapper so it can ring during special events and ceremonies. It will be reinstalled under a new shade structure just south of City Hall and remain an on-site landmark.
