Cupertino hears hours-and-equipment debate as city manager proposes fence panels and voluntary quieting measures for pickleball

Hundreds of residents and players attended the July 1 Cupertino City Council meeting to oppose a proposed mandatory limit on pickleball play and to press the city for a sound wall instead.

The comments followed an email from the mayor and a city manager update that outlined a multi-step mitigation plan for noise at Memorial Park courts. Interim City Manager (unnamed in the meeting) told the council that staff intends to implement the first step immediately: installing sound-attenuating material on the courts' perimeter fence and posting signage that asks players to observe “quiet hours” and consider using quieter paddles and balls. The manager emphasized the equipment guidelines and quiet hours on the signage are requests, not mandatory regulations: "we're not limiting the hours of pickleball. We're not requiring anybody, but it is a request," the manager said.
