Parents’ concern flagged: Commissioner says modernization projects will include playgrounds; interim funding not identified

Commissioner Deionne Wells Hedrington said the department’s modernization work and upcoming projects will include amenities such as playgrounds. “All of the modernizations and the new builds will have the amenities, which include playgrounds,” Wells said, but she added she was unsure where interim funding would come from to build a playground before modernization is complete.
Senators pressed for options to address the immediate need for play space for younger students; Wells suggested discussions with the bureau of construction and the superintendent’s office as possible next steps.
The committee did not adopt any motion; senators asked the department to explore funding or temporary solutions while modernization projects proceed.
