Carmel council continues public hearing on JB Pasteur commercial appeal to Aug. 4

The Carmel-by-the-Sea City Council voted unanimously to continue a public hearing on APP 25115, the Viranza Carmel Commercial (JB Pasteur building) appeal, to a special city council meeting on Aug. 4.
City officials opened the hearing solely to take public comment on whether the item should be continued rather than on the substance of the appeal. The council then moved to continue the matter; the motion passed in a roll call that the clerk recorded as “Motion carries 4 0 0 1.”
Julia Christopher, a member of the public who said she had rescheduled travel to attend in person, told the council she appreciated its time and the work it does. “I very much respect the work that you do here,” Christopher said, adding she had come to speak but understood that comments at the session were limited to the continuance.
Mayor Byrne (the mayor) said staff would provide the same notices that accompanied the original hearing and would notify impacted parties, the appellants and the applicant ahead of the Aug. 4 special meeting. The council did not hear substantive testimony on the merits of APP 25115 on the June agenda.
The item was continued to the Aug. 4 special meeting; the council did not set a firm start time during the June session and said more detailed noticing would follow.
The council adjourned the public portion of the meeting and scheduled a closed session after the continuance vote.
