Houston Public Library celebrates Barbara Bush’s literacy legacy with family programming

A library staff member said the library’s children’s area on the first floor is named the “Barbara Bush literacy family space” and that the Barbara Bush literacy plaza is adjacent to Central Library. “I’m very grateful that Barbara Bush left such a loving legacy, during her lifetime and, you know, in the present,” the staff member said.
Parents and library staff described programs intended to show Houston’s diversity and to offer a safe place for children to check out books and participate in community events. One parent said the library “offers a safe place to check out books and to come to community events and be part of something bigger than ourselves.”
Library staff emphasized youth programming and services such as story times, crafts and films, and said those offerings are central to their daily work with children. Speakers at the events framed the celebration as continuing Bush’s advocacy for early reading.
