Springfield High boys and girls lacrosse teams honored after historic state championship season

The Springfield School District Board of School Directors opened its June 25 meeting with recognition of the Springfield High boys and girls lacrosse teams after both programs completed historic seasons.
Coaches, school leaders and a state representative addressed the board and the crowd to celebrate the athletes' achievements. "For the first time in Pennsylvania state history, both of our boys and girls teams have won their district championships and state championships in the same season," said a district speaker introducing the teams. The speakers and coaches recounted season records, playoff runs and national rankings.
Girls coach Sarah Damato told the board the girls finished the season 25-1, won the Central League title, the District 1 championship and came back from deficits in elimination games before winning the state final. The team finished ranked 13th among public schools nationally, the coach said.
The boys program finished 24-1, won its fifth District 1 championship and the program's sixth state title; the team was ranked No. 2 among public schools nationally, the coaches said. Boys coach remarks cited a long streak of state playoff appearances and listed program milestones, including more than 500 career wins for head coach Keith Broom.
State Representative O'Mara attended and presented citations from the Pennsylvania House recognizing the teams' accomplishments. "I was so excited that I could be here tonight, home from session, to celebrate the boys and girls lacrosse team," Representative O'Mara said, and presented citations for the school, teams, coaches and players.
Board members, coaches and families posed for photographs after the recognition. School administrators and coaches thanked athletic directors and volunteer youth coaches for supporting player development and cited community pride in the teams' state and national results.
What it means: the board's recognition was ceremonial; no formal policy or budget action tied to the recognition was recorded in the meeting minutes.
