The Alabama State Board of Education on May 9 adopted a resolution recognizing the Grow Our Own initiative and the Future Teachers of Alabama organization, programs designed to recruit and prepare future educators.
Dr. Mackey, an official with the Alabama State Department of Education, described Grow Our Own as a partnership with the Alabama Education Association that supports school-based clubs promoting the teaching profession. He said the legislature provides some funding — up to $1,000 per program — to help with travel and to pay a teacher sponsor. Dr. Mackey said the program gives students practice teaching opportunities and sometimes placements in other schools for broader experience.
Dr. Mackey introduced students and advisors from Coleman High School and Autauga County Technology Center, noting winners of statewide competitions in video lesson plans and notebook/display categories. The board moved and seconded the resolution and approved it unanimously by raised hands.
Dr. Mackey said the department is discussing plans to expand the program in the next one to two years and identified Dr. Laura Bailey as the department lead for the work.
