The Parks & Recreation Commission presented a summary of its activities and priorities to the City Council on June 24.
Commissioner John Thompson outlined the commission—hairmanship and membership changes, including two vacancies that will exist July 1. He highlighted a new youth advisory member, Henry Ray, who will provide input on youth programming. The commission said its priorities include community engagement and programming, fiscal responsibility with attention to reducing future maintenance costs (for example selecting low-water plantings) and close collaboration with Public Works on playground and skate-park improvements.
Commissioners emphasized expanded outreach and equitable access to recreation for underrepresented groups, singling out recent success with a Spanish-language film series and community soccer nights. Director Jans told council the 2025 summer concert series at Lyman Park had kicked off and that the city will continue performances weekly (except one break), including a July 4 performance and family activities and fireworks scheduled for the holiday.
The commission also flagged longer-term priorities: a parks-and-trails master plan that will come before council and near-term opportunities to enhance trails and open spaces. Commissioner Thompson thanked staff for collaboration on recent playground and landscaping improvements, including Lyman Park and Miley Park.
