Shawnee County OKs multiyear Axon contract that includes future AI tools

The Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners on June 23 approved contract C257-2025 to consolidate five existing agreements with Axon Enterprises, a vendor for body cameras, in-car video and digital evidence services. The board voted 2-0 to approve the contract after a presentation from the sheriff's office and an Axon representative.
The contract will be prorated for 2027 at $691,838.42 and the sheriff's office expects a subsequent annual cost of about $881,682. Funding will come from a combination of existing budgeted funds and the county's equipment and technology fund, Shane Hoobler of the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office said. Commissioners voted to approve the contract on a motion by Commissioner Mays, seconded by Commissioner Cook.
The sheriff's office framed the agreement as both a consolidation of multiple contracts and a long-term licensing arrangement that will entitle Shawnee County to each new Axon artificial-intelligence feature as it is released while the county remains under contract. An Axon…
