Huron board introduces suite of library policies, superintendent cites new statutory appeal process

Superintendent Dr. Steinhoff told the board the major change reflected in the policy package is a new statutory requirement to provide an appeal process. "If we have a parent that wants to have a book or material be reviewed and potentially be taken out, then if they don't like that first step, then they can appeal it to the superintendent. And then if they don't like my answer, they can appeal it to you as a board. If they don't like your answers as a board, they can appeal it to the circuit court of appeals," Dr. Steinhoff said during the meeting. He characterized the addition as a grievance process similar to other grievance procedures.
The policies introduced by title were: IIAB (library materials); IIAB-1 (library materials opt-out form); IIAB-2 (request for reconsideration of instructional/curricular/library materials); IIAB-3 (permission for middle school students to use high school library materials); IIAB-4 (permission form); IIAB-5 (copyright policy); IIAB-6 (library bill of rights); IIAB-7 (freedom to read); and IIAB-8 (student right to read). Board materials indicate these items will be placed on the board's next agenda for a first reading and on a future agenda for a second reading and final approval.
