Board agrees to pursue camera-based enforcement and letters of support to curb illegal dumping

Supervisors and staff discussed recurring illegal dumping on Cemetery Road and other county locations, and whether cameras and targeted enforcement could reduce the problem.

A supervisor suggested placing cameras at road entrances and coordinating with the city’s existing camera network; staff noted one camera deployment had deterred dumping at a particular spot but that dumpers simply relocated. Board members discussed using solar camera units, doorbell-style home cameras and a real-time crime center approach reported from neighboring jurisdictions; county staff said some systems can ingest feeds from privately owned cameras.

The sheriff and other law enforcement representatives recommended a mix of camera placements, public notices and stiffer penalties for repeat offenders; supervisors discussed fines and court penalties that would act as deterrents.

The board approved a motion to prepare a letter of support for expanded camera-based enforcement in problem apartment complexes and to coordinate with the city and property managers for joint action. Staff said they would gather cost estimates and vendor options and report back; the board also asked staff to check for grant or lower-cost camera alternatives and to consider portable solar units for remote locations.
