Sheriff reports jail population drop and requests equipment repairs and staff certification funding

Sheriff’s Office leadership told supervisors the jail population is down about 40 percent from the prior year following coordinated work with judges and the district attorney’s office. The sheriff credited regular case reviews and pretrial decisions for the reduction.
The sheriff also reported damage to critical communications equipment after a lightning strike and requested a $7,000 transfer from repair and replacement to mobile-equipment to purchase a switch and related hardware needed to restore full capability and support state and federal reporting. The sheriff said insurance (Travelers) had been engaged but had not yet fully reimbursed the county; the board approved staff moving the $7,000 to procure interim equipment so operations could continue.
In addition, the sheriff asked to transfer $500 from office furniture to training/travel to fund a two-year corrections certification for a corrections officer who has reached the two-year service requirement. The board approved that transfer and the related training expense.
Supervisors also discussed inmate-trustee counts and capacity; staff noted only three inmate trustees are currently available and that some of the county’s arrests and custody decisions are affected by state custody transfer and court scheduling.
The board approved the requested budget moves to allow immediate purchases and training while staff pursues insurance recovery for the lightning-related damage.
