City launches outreach with EDCO to curb illegal dumping near apartment complexes

City staff and representatives from EDCO presented an update June 24 on work to reduce illegal dumping near apartment complexes and the council unanimously received the report.
Public Works staff said the city compiled an initial list of hotspots and during recent site visits expanded the list to 14 locations. Staff showed a map correlating MyCivic app sanitation and debris requests with the hotspots and described outreach steps taken with EDCO, including a flyer promoting EDCO’s bulky-item pickup and household trash services.
Staff and EDCO representatives said they visited apartment property managers on May 27 to provide educational flyers and guidance; three managers reported they already used EDCO’s bulky-item pickup program and nine managers were given outreach materials. At one location staff referred the matter to code compliance for private-property issues and at another staff received reports that non-residents were dumping by the property.
Councilmembers asked whether materials were available in multiple languages; staff said current materials were not but that translating them could be considered and that signage in hot-spot locations could help. EDCO’s phone number and a notice to call to avoid fines are included on the outreach materials, staff said; bulky-item pickup allowances were noted as four per year per unit.
Councilmember motioned to receive the report; the motion carried unanimously.
