The City of Hurst proclaimed July as Parks and Recreation Month and Hearst Parks and Recreation staff presented a schedule of events that city officials said will run throughout the month, including the citys Stars and Stripes celebration with live music and a fireworks display.
The proclamation was read by Mayor Henry Wilson, who said, "I, Henry Wilson, Mayor of the City Of Hearst, Texas, and on behalf of the City Council and Citizens, hereby proclaim July as Parks and Recreation Month." The council did not take a separate recorded vote on the proclamation; it was presented and acknowledged as part of the evenings agenda.
Why it matters: Parks and recreation programming was presented to council as a public-health, economic and community-benefit priority, with staff saying programs support physical activity, social connection and local economic activity.
Hearst Parks and Recreation Director Amy Oden outlined the departments offerings and events for the month. She cited the National Recreation and Park Association theme for the year, "build together, play together," and said the department prepared a full schedule of family and fitness events. Noted items in the presentation included a boat-float event to kick off July, STEM-focused crafts, rock painting, expanded fitness offerings and a monthlong roster of activities at Chisholm Aquatic Center. Oden described aquatics programming as central to drowning prevention, fitness and community connection.
Staff also previewed the Stars and Stripes celebration as the months signature event: gates at Hearst Community Park will open at 6:00 p.m.; shuttles will run from the mall beginning at 5:30 p.m.; Grady Spencer and The Work are scheduled to start at about 6:30 p.m., a second act (Q the band) is scheduled for 8:00 p.m., and a fireworks show is planned to cap the evening around 9:30 p.m. The event will include roughly 14 food vendors and a childrens activity zone, city staff said.
In remarks, Mayor Pro Tem John McKenzie and council members singled out parks staff for praise and thanked the department for maintenance of parkland and program delivery. The council and staff encouraged residents to participate in events and new programming offered through the month.
