Weston County adopts Stage 1 open-burning restrictions effective July 7

The Weston County Board of Commissioners approved Resolution 25-14, instituting Stage 1 open-burning restrictions across the county effective July 7, 2025, citing the county fire warden’s recommendation and applicable statute.

Under the resolution, many categories of open burning are restricted except for specified activities conducted with mitigating precautions: campfires at residences or developed recreation sites, trash and refuse fires in closed containers between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., charcoal fires in enclosed grills, certain cutting and welding operations, and use of portable, enclosed stoves and lanterns — each permitted only when centered within a cleared radius of at least 15 feet of burnable materials and with a shovel or equivalent fire suppression present.

A commissioner noted this Stage 1 order is more lenient than the total ban sometimes used in prior years and urged residents to be cautious around fireworks; the board discussed rescinding the order if conditions change. The board subsequently moved to approve the chairman’s signature on Resolution 25‑14; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote with no opposing votes announced.
