Leland council adopts CAMA land-use addendum to Leland 2045; plan sent to state for certification

Policy goals included bolstering public access, limiting density and intensity of development near areas of environmental concern, prioritizing shared-use boating facilities over multiple private piers, limiting dredging to maintenance activities, and encouraging low-impact development and nature-based stormwater solutions.
Fursinger said Leland27s population has doubled between 2010 and 2023 and that state projections, using weighted development activity and building permits, anticipate continued growth that could put the town27s population over 80,000 by 2050 if current trends continue. The Planning Board reviewed the draft on May 27 and recommended approval by a 7-0 vote, finding it consistent with Leland 2045 strategies to protect natural resources and grow sustainably.
After the council vote, Fursinger described the next steps: staff will submit the adopted addendum to the Division of Coastal Management; the state will open a 30-day public comment period, review comments, and then decide whether to certify the local plan.
