Kershaw County Council on Tuesday approved an intergovernmental memorandum of agreement to allow the South Carolina Department on Aging to house a state-funded Dementia Care Specialist at the Camden Public Library.
Library staff explained the position will provide counseling, resource navigation and programming for people living with dementia and their caregivers across a four-county service area. The state will fund the position and the county's contribution is in-kind office space at the library; staff noted the county will work with the state on any necessary proration if the start date is adjusted.
Why it matters: the specialist will offer direct, no-cost counseling and referral services for adults and families dealing with dementia-related diagnoses, within a community-based setting familiar to residents. The library and the Department on Aging said the role will coordinate with the library's existing community health worker and with school and nonprofit partners.
The agreement passed on second reading during the meeting; council asked staff to confirm start dates and proration language with the state before final execution.
