The Salt Lake City School District Board of Education voted June 17 to authorize staff to apply to the Utah State Board of Education to implement a focused graduation pathway that permits certain juniors and seniors to use GED subject tests to make up missing core credits.
The pathway applies to students who are significantly behind in the four core areas — English, math, science and social studies — and meet minimum eligibility: juniors who are six credits behind or seniors who are three credits behind in those content areas, are at least 16 years old and demonstrate at least a ninth-grade reading level. Participation requires parental consent. Dr. Tiffany Hall said schools would use practice tests and preparatory support before students take official GED tests.
