Council declares remaining properties public nuisances, authorizes weed abatement

The Paso Robles City Council on June 17 adopted a resolution confirming the existence of weeds and other hazardous growth on a small set of properties and authorized the fire chief to proceed with abatement under city ordinance 10.68 N.S.
Battalion Chief and Fire Marshal Paul Petty briefed the council on the 2025 hazardous fuels outlook, reporting the city conducted inspections in May that initially identified roughly 630 noncompliant parcels and that number has fallen to 27 as property owners responded. Petty said notices were mailed and if mail was returned, physical notices were posted on properties. He told council he would provide an updated exhibit that shows three parcels scheduled for abatement as early as the next morning if they remained noncompliant.
Council declared the remaining properties listed in exhibit 1A to be public nuisances and authorized the fire chief to abate those sites; the council approved the resolution by unanimous vote. Petty said contracted crews will be used where owners do not comply and that abatement work was scheduled to be completed by June 30 for the properties referred to the contractor.
The action uses the city's weed abatement authority to remove hazardous fuels that can contribute to wildfire risk, and is part of an annual program staff said had reduced vegetation fires over the last four years.
