Jenks council amends lodging-tax code to include short-term rentals

The Jenks City Council on Monday approved Ordinance 1669, an amendment to the city code that expands the definition of “accommodations” to include short-term rentals so that platforms such as Airbnb and VRBO will collect and remit the city’s hotel/motel (lodging) tax.
City staff explained the change responds to increased use of short-term rental platforms and prior vendor guidance that the city identify those rentals in code for automatic tax collection. “When Airbnb and VRBO became popular…we thought it would be prudent to add this language to our ordinance so that we are receiving that 5% hotel motel tax on short term rental stays,” a staff presenter said.
Councilors voted unanimously to adopt the ordinance and to approve the emergency clause. The staff report said the immediate financial impact is minimal but did not include a detailed revenue estimate for the change.
What’s next: staff and the city’s finance department will implement the code change and coordinate with short-term rental platforms to ensure tax collection and remittance.
