Staff recommended approval of the future land-use amendment (from medium/high-density to low-density residential for the school site) and the rezoning (from RM multifamily to RS-110 single-family, as captioned) to accommodate the public high school. The item drew public support from residents and former school staff who described longstanding building deficiencies at the existing facility; former teacher Tonya Jean Funny told the board she had seen water intrusion and temperature-control failures in classrooms.
Mickey Garber, a longtime resident, urged approval and said the county's high schools deserve adequate buildings. The board voted to approve both the future land-use change and the rezoning after unanimous or voice votes recorded at the meeting.
Board members said the new school will address overcrowding and infrastructure issues and replace trailers and aging facilities. The county will proceed with planning and permitting stages following the zoning and land-use approvals.
