Council told sidewalk assessment letters to go out June 27; residents get until Aug. 8 to pay

Jim Bell told the council the annual city sidewalk assessment ordinance will appear on the Monday meeting agenda with an emergency clause so the council can waive second reading.
Bell said letters notifying affected property owners will be mailed June 27 and those owners will have until Aug. 8 to pay the city for repairs rather than accepting the assessment. "They'll have until August 8 to pay, so that's about 6 weeks," Bell said, noting the change provides more time than prior years.
Bell reported that the total assessment amount seeking placement with the county auditor — if no owners choose to pay directly — would be $114,472.66. He said he expects that total to be lower when staff returns in late August after payments are tallied.
The proposed ordinance will include an emergency clause so that, if adopted Monday, it can be approved and the letters issued promptly. Bell said residents are normally notified a year in advance if their sidewalk is slated for repair, but the extra payment window is intended to give more time to respond.
Councilmembers expressed support for the extended payment window.
