The spokesperson said Ms. Yang brings more than 30 years of experience in economic and social development.
The briefing also noted that it was the International Day to Combat Desertification and Drought and quoted the secretary-general's message that restoring land offers large returns on investment and benefits including poverty reduction and job creation.
Separately, the spokesperson said the secretary-general was traveling to Canada to attend an outreach session linked to the G7 leaders' summit in Kananaskis and would hold bilateral meetings while there.
