The Canton City Council voted to table a decision on a quote to install turf (or alternate decking) at a pool facility pending additional comparable bids and further review.
Council members received three quotes for the project: a lower quote from Thornton, a local quote from Kerberfield, and a higher quote from Van Holland of Sioux Center. The Van Holland bid—solicited by the city engineer—included additional components such as a concrete apron around the fence that the other bids did not list, making direct comparisons difficult. Staff recommended delaying the work until the pool is closed for the season because installation would disrupt pool operations for nearly a week.
Commissioner Carlson asked staff to solicit more quotes and to explore wood or composite decking as a feasible alternative to artificial turf; some councilors noted turf can become hot and may be less comfortable than wood decking. The council approved a motion to table the item and directed staff to collect additional, comparable quotes and to return with an updated recommendation in the fall.
No formal contract was awarded at the meeting; the motion to table passed on a council vote.
