Coop Architecture reports 2,700 responses to master-plan survey; draft due early March

Coop Architecture on Feb. 4 gave the Rapid City Area School Board an update on the district master-plan process, reporting more than 2,700 completed surveys and multiple community input sessions.
Principal architect Jared Sard said Coop visited district buildings, met with principals and conducted stakeholder workshops to assess facility needs, security and long-term priorities. The firm identified recurring themes in community feedback: maintenance and infrastructure, safety and security, classroom size and staffing, inclusive accessibility, technology and recreational/wellness facilities.
Coop has scheduled four community input sessions (Rapid Valley Elementary, Central, Stevens and Rapid City Alternative Academy) and said the attendance and comments will inform the draft plan. Sard said the firm will present a draft master plan to the board in early March and seeks to finalize a 5' to 10'year master plan addressing facility maintenance, modernization and capacity needs.
Board and facilities-committee members stressed the practical consequences of aging systems. Trustee Walt Swan and other members cited recent facility emergencies (including a boiler outage and vandalism-related repairs discussed elsewhere in the meeting) as evidence of the district's need for a long-range plan for capital investment.
Coop asked for continued community participation and said the firm will provide an updated draft to the board for review, followed by an opportunity for the public to comment before the plan is finalized.
