Canton approves weeklong citywide cleanup with curbside sign-up and volunteer support

The Canton City Council approved a weeklong citywide cleanup for July 7–12, with the city dump open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and extended hours 6–8 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday of that week.
Council members adopted rules limiting accepted items to typical roll‑off/dump materials and excluding appliances, tires, mattresses and flammable or explosive items. Residents who need pickup assistance must sign up in advance with their name, phone number, address and a requested date and time; items must be placed at the curb and the resident must be present during pickup. Volunteers will be recruited to avoid overtime for city employees, and certain items that previously carried fees (for example, compressors) will still require payment.
Staff members Christine and Sarah presented the plan, saying it was designed to “benefit and would also not be a burden on the city employees.” Christine told the council the program will not include entering private property for pickups: “All the items must be at the curb already,” she said.
Councilors and staff said the city intends to verify addresses at the dump to prevent nonresident use, citing prior instances when people from nearby Lennox brought material to Canton’s dump days. Council members also discussed coordinating the timing so the cleanup week does not conflict with Depot Days events.
The motion to implement the July 7–12 cleanup passed on a council vote.
The council encouraged residents who want to volunteer or request assistance to sign up via the city’s usual channels; staff said volunteer sign-ups will ask whether volunteers can provide manpower, trailers or pickups.
Planning and volunteer recruitment were described as ongoing; staff will publish the sign-up process and the final rules for the cleanup week ahead of July 7.
