Brookings — The council honored Captain Jeff Lee, who will become the city’s Operations Fire Chief on Feb. 1, and announced a planned recognition for K9 Nova would be rescheduled after the canine’s unexpected medical emergency and death.
A public safety presenter informed the council that Nova, the department K9, suffered an unexpected medical emergency and passed away; the planned public recognition will be rescheduled and Officer Jason Barricker, Nova’s handler, will accept a recognition on the canine’s behalf. The presenter said a recognition for Nova will be held at a later date.
Council and staff then recognized Jeff Lee’s selection for the operations fire chief role. City staff said Lee has been with the Brookings Fire Department for nearly 20 years, has served as a captain for 12 years and was a volunteer before that. Staff invited the public to a pinning ceremony scheduled for Thursday; Lee told the council he was doing training that night and declined to give a speech.
Council members thanked Lee for his service and extended condolences to Officer Barricker for the loss of Nova. No formal personnel action took place at the meeting; the item was a recognition and announcement.
