South Coast Community Aquatics reports nearly 2,000 winter pool visits; propane costs far exceed expectations

“Since the December 1 when we opened, we have had 1,963 individuals take advantage of the pool,” Val Early said, describing a mix of monthly memberships, open swim and recent swim lessons. Early thanked city staff, Crescent City staff and community partners for operational support and said SCCA will provide a full season report after the program closes.
Early said SCCA and its partner entity split slightly more than $14,000 in revenue — exceeding an earlier stated $10,000 minimum — but the group did not anticipate propane costs. “The propane bill alone is a little over $29,000 so far,” Early said, and she estimated total pilot expenses were “closer to around $32,000.”
Early said SCCA is running a lifeguard recertification class after the season to prepare for summer programming and that a grant is assisting lessons for underprivileged children. She said patrons appreciate the pool’s warm water temperature and year-round availability despite local weather.
Councilors thanked SCCA for coordinating with Crescent City and for steps to provide lessons and subsidized programming. No formal council action was taken; Early said SCCA will return a final report after the season closes and books are reconciled with Crescent City.
