Committee reviews revised student-welfare policy, flags personal-vehicle transport procedure

The policy committee reviewed revisions to board Policy 340 (Responsibility for Student Welfare) on Feb. 24, with staff noting the update was prompted by a need to develop administrative regulations for transporting students in personal vehicles.
Cassandra Jones, Director of Pupil Services and Supports, said the policy was revised and administrative regulations are being developed to govern procedures for staff transporting students in personal vehicles. "We were looking at our procedures; we thought it was important to update, review the policy to ensure that it was current before moving forward with developing those administrative regulations," Jones said.
Trustees emphasized clarity and staff protection. Vicki Garrett said the policy must clearly define the line between assigned duties and voluntary actions by employees, saying voluntary assumption "carries the same responsibility as assigned duties" and affirming the need to protect both students and staff. Board members asked staff to ensure the forthcoming administrative regulations specify limits and required approvals for personal-vehicle transport.
No formal action was taken; staff said they will draft and return administrative regulations to the committee for review before forwarding any final policy or procedures to the board.
