Cumberland County library director marks last meeting, cites increased use and literacy programs

Dan Brenner, director of the Cumberland County Library, used his final appearance before the Cumberland County Board of County Commissioners on Dec. 12 to present library usage statistics and to thank county officials for their support.

"Between January 2 and November 30 of this year, the libraries had 37,651 people enter the library to move services. 31,474 physical materials were checked out," Brenner said, adding that 16,659 of those checked-out items were for children and teens. He also reported an increase in electronic items (16,189) and described numerous programs for children and adults, including 1,199 children’s programs with 5,112 children attending.

Commissioners responded with praise for the library’s outreach and literacy work. Commissioner Marshon thanked Brenner for his leadership and noted the impact of literacy-focused programming; other commissioners echoed appreciation for the staff and highlighted partnerships that helped extend library services beyond central locations.

Why it matters: library attendance and program participation figures are evidence of local demand for literacy and digital-access services; commissioners framed the library as a key partner for workforce and youth-development initiatives.

Ending: Commissioners publicly recognized Brenner’s service and presented a commemorative glass sculpture commissioned by local artists; the board offered thanks and best wishes as Brenner departs the post.
