Jeremy Myers, Geary County Public Works administrator, and Caitlin Ross, administrative services manager, explained that the transfer station’s existing provider had intermittent service and that Twin Valley (a local provider) might be available but requires railroad approvals and could take weeks or months to reach the site. Staff recommended Starlink as a short‑term, contract‑free alternative that meets current speed and reliability needs.
Commissioners approved proceeding with Starlink. Staff estimated equipment and installation around $1,000 and a monthly business rate of approximately $140; county staff said costs would come from the solid waste fund and that any government rate could reduce the monthly charge. Commissioners noted they could revisit the choice if a local fiber option becomes available.
The vote authorizes Public Works to proceed with procurement and installation so the transfer station camera system can operate reliably while staff continues to evaluate long‑term connectivity options.
