Geary County Commission approves letter of intent to reapply for OPUS outreach grant

Geary County commissioners approved a letter of intent allowing the Health Department to reapply for the OPUS outreach, prevention and early intervention grant.
The request came from Charles Martinez, director of the Geary County Health Department, who told the commission the letter is identical to applications filed in previous years and asked for the board’s signature so staff can submit the county’s application package. OPUS funds a case manager and services for high‑risk families with young children to reduce homelessness and food insecurity, Martinez said.
The commission moved and seconded approval. After brief discussion about the program’s services and outcomes, the board voted and the motion carried by voice vote.
Martinez described OPUS as a long‑term case management program that follows clients, usually families with children under 5, for “a couple of years” to help with budgeting, resources and housing stability, and said most participants have good outcomes. The commission did not set additional conditions for the signature; Martinez indicated the required original paperwork was in the meeting packet and would be signed following the meeting.
The vote authorizes staff to sign and file the letter of intent for the OPUS grant using the same application materials submitted in prior years.
