Shawnee County Emergency Management announces Severe Weather Preparedness Week and reschedules storm spotter class

Dylan Hart of the Shawnee County Department of Emergency Management briefed commissioners on Severe Weather Preparedness Week, which runs this week, and on adjustments to a planned storm-spotter class.
Hart said the office will post daily preparedness tips on Facebook and link to the National Weather Service in Topeka. Each day of the outreach focuses on a different hazard: general preparedness, flood safety, tornado safety, hail and high-wind safety, and lightning safety. Hart said residents should know family plans and shelter locations and that the department will provide guidance and situational updates.
Hart also said a storm spotters class scheduled for March 5 at Washburn Tech with the National Weather Service was postponed because of expected severe weather; the county will reschedule and post the new date. He warned of a forecast that includes severe thunderstorms, a high wind watch with gusts potentially 60-70 mph and possible blizzard-like conditions as the system moves through.
No action was required; commissioners received the briefing and the Emergency Management Department said it would post updates and the rescheduled training details online.
