The Rankin County Board of Supervisors approved a series of routine and project items March 3. Key votes and outcomes from the meeting are summarized below.
Approved items (voice votes, motion carried unless noted): - Approval of previous meeting minutes and consent agenda (motion carried). - Tax assessor items: petitions to adjust the 2024 homestead exemption supplemental roll; change of assessment for 2024 real property assessments; generating a missed 2024 tax bill for a sold parcel; and voiding a 2024 tax bill for a parcel that should have been exempt (motions carried). - Authority to accept a reverse auction for one or more new hydraulic excavators at $203,752.25 each; board authorized purchase of one excavator and left option open for additional purchases if funds become available (motion carried). - Road and utility permits: AT&T permit for South Pearson Road; White Road fiber-optic permit; Atmos gas-service permit on Gunner/ Shallow Drive; a 7-point gas line on Mill Run Road (West Ridge); CenterPoint District 4 Oakdale/Main gas-line permit — all motions carried. - Roadwork schedule for February (work scheduled in March) and related road consent matters (motions carried). - Two LSVP bridge-replacement programs approved to replace bridges on Myers Road and Old Highway 80; these projects reduce the county’s list of posted low-weight bridges and were recommended for immediate action (motion carried). - Sixteenth-section leasehold tax handling: staff authorized the chancery clerk and tax collector to accept current-year tax payments from new tenants on school district (sixteenth-section) leaseholds while the county pursues prior unpaid ad valorem (Avalon) taxes from the former lessee or estate; board authorized the staff approach to avoid tax-sale complications (motion carried).
Several items were discussed at length (see separate articles): a county-initiated rezoning for 379 Highway 43 South (approved); a conditional use permit for 506 Kirsten Way (denied); a nuisance/condemnation matter at 163 Pine Acre Place (hearing set for March 17); and a countywide discussion of manufactured-home age and inspection policy (staff directed to draft language).
